Since in our times smartphones already think of the first aspect, it is important that a watch points to the second characteristic, adding character and elegance to the wearer's outfit. And what better than a classic mechanical watch can it succeed better in this aim?
According to the words of the American writer William Gibson, "mechanical watches are genially useless": in fact, always according to the well-known author of science fiction novels, a quartz watch will surely keep time more precisely, not to mention that the cost will be significantly reduced : however, the beauty of manual watches lies in the fact that they need continuous care and maintenance by the owner.
THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MECHANICAL AND QUARTZ WATCHES
Mechanical watches are often more expensive because they have been meticulously made, often in an artisanal way, to mark time. In quartz watches, this function is performed by a battery.
Automatic or manual watches, on the other hand, must be loaded by hand or through the constant movement of the arm. This charge is activated via a spring that transmits energy to a series of gears. These gears then transform the energy into movement, and each small wheel is responsible for the different movement of the hands. Another component, called the escapement, controls the speed with which the spring is released. This component makes use of wheels, teeth, pins, dots and its own spring: it would be an understatement to say that it is a complex system!
Mechanical watches are divided into manuals and automatic. Most manual watches have an energy reserve of about 40 hours, after which they must be recharged, while the automatic system converts the movement of the arm into energy on its own.
QUARTZ OR MECHANICAL: HOW TO CHOOSE THE WATCH
If you have to choose which of the two types of watch to buy, for yourself or to make a gift, you need to consider your needs and the prestige of the watch itself. A mechanical watch is a watch that tends to acquire value over time: the most prestigious brands, in fact, continue to produce mechanical watches. Because of their complex mechanism, they are objects that attract attention and certainly full of charm.
Mechanical watches are therefore the ones that are mostly worn in case of important dinners or work, these are the watches that will make you look good.
It must be said, however, that quartz watches are watches that stand over time starting to become more and more important and also known in terms of prestige. This type of watch is generally more resistant, although once broken it will make it difficult to repair it at low costs. Secondly, a quartz watch is more precise than mechanical ones which have deviations, if they are precise, of about 4 seconds per day (however, various factors depend on the deviation, such as the position of the watch and the temperature), while the watches quartz generally have a gap of 4 seconds per month.
Despite this, fans of mechanical watches consider accuracy to be an insignificant factor: this type of watch is a true work of art and must be taken for this, with all its imperfections.
